BB Review: The Show Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine is art. Whilst we absolutely believe this, the label isn't always the most eye-catching or interesting. But for this round, we're judging bottles based on their shelf appeal and are finding out if the art inside the bottle lives up to what's on it.  🖼  🍷  🤔

WHO BOUGHT IT & WHY:  Caro! This bottle had caught my eye when first introduced on the shelves two months ago. I had never seen a label like that: a bit of fashionable, retro letterpress style and a total attitude, in both the colour palette and the name. I mean, that wine is basically like that hot person who knows they’re hot... and I ended up buying into its pretentious charms (and I’m so glad I did!).

LET'S GET NERDY: Behind The SHOW, you’ll find a trio of producers, each with a string of big hits to their credit. Joel Gott, Roger Scommegna and Charles Bieler are the Three Thieves, and together, they make off-the-charts wines using grapes from prime vineyards in California's central and north coast regions.

PARTY FACT: The design of these wines was created by the iconic American print shop, Hatch Show Print. Based in Nashville, Hatch Show Print has been making show posters using traditional hand-carved woodblocks, type and metal plates for over a century. When the Three Thieves got together to make The SHOW in 2005, they partnered with Hatch Show Print and together created an iconic look to perfectly pair with this iconic wine. How cool is that?!

THE VERDICT

CARO: Wow. It’s rare to find such a great balance in a wine at this price, and this one kept the three of us silent with satisfaction for quite a while! A light but beautifully rounded Morello cherry, balanced up by woody and spicy aromas and a slight tingle on the tongue. MORE.

ANGELA: This has a delicious deep ruby colour and the aroma is just as inviting with strawberry wheels, liquorice, chocolate and spice… Oh! And some Morello cherry. Basically everything delicious. And it delivers on the taste, which smoothly lingers on the palate. I’ve found Cabernet has fallen out of favour in the last couple of years when I’ve been choosing wine,  but this might kick-start the Cabernet love again.

KATE: This wine smells sooooo gooooood. Juicy! Fruity! With a hint of cinnamon and spice (and everything nice). Like, I don't mean to put anyone off it bc honestly it's really good, but this Cab-Sav tastes like a truly delicious cherry cough drop (which– can I just say– should be easier to find in the Year of Our Lord 2017 can I get an amen?). It's funny to me that this label features a rough-and-tumble cowboy when it's as charming and smooth as James-freaking-Bond. And like James Bond, it's got me all 😍 😍 😍 . (If you must know, Pierce Bosnan is my favourite Bond. Fight me.)

WOULD WE HAVE ANOTHER GLASS? We haven't found a wine we all like this much in eons. Guess we'll have to fight each other for the rest of the bottle... #MayTheOddsBeEverInOurFavour
